Farinelli and the King

Mark Rylance, the Oscar- and 3-time Tony-winner, stars in this original-practices style production similar to his most recent Bway appearance in the Globe's Richard III and Twelfth Night. The comic play tells the story of a world-famous 18th century castrato who gave up Europe's opera houses to be a court musician to King Philippe V of Spain (Rylance), who suffered from bouts of severe depression held at bay by the healing impact of music.

The production features seven arias, most by Handel, accompanied by period instruments. The arias move the plot forward and fit within the context of the play, much as songs would in a jukebox musical.
