Josh Groban made his Bway debut in this new sung-through musical, an adaptation of a segment of Tolstoy's War and Peace. Groban's role, Pierre, has been expanded to provide additional material tailored to his voice. The story follows Natasha, an aristocratic young woman who turns her back on a "proper" society marriage and falls madly in love with a handsome, but worthless, playboy.
The productions will be an immersive experience, with actors and musicians performing amid the audience, which will be transported to a supper club in 19th century Moscow, where passions ignite as Napoleon's war rages outside the city.
The original score merges Russian folk and classical music with indie rock, punk riffs, Broadway ballads and klezmer clarinets. When the show played off-Bway, The New York Times called it "a vibrant, transporting new musical."
Groban is scheduled to leave the show July 2.
