This new musical, adapted by Terrence McNally from the 1997 animated film, is a romantic mystery about a young woman with amnesia who isn't sure if she is the youngest daughter of Czar Nicholas II, and the last surviving member of the Russian royal family. The Lynn Ahrens/Stephen Flaherty score uses material they wrote for the movie, plus new songs from the Tony-winning Ragtime team. Tony-winner Darko Tresnjak (A Gentleman's Guide...) directs.
Variety said the show, in its pre-Bway run, is "stunningly staged, emotionally rich and expertly crafted" and that it "embraces the power of myth, celebrates the resilience of survivors and touches on the meaning and identity of home."
